As a think tank and catalyst, the Hamer Center supports collaborative research projects, facilitates dialogue between the academic and practitioner communities, and recognizes excellence in planning and design from an international perspective. We are guided by geometries of change at four scales —citizenship, community, public, and democracy. To this end, Hamer shares educational resources, serves as a forum for collaboration, facilitates networking, connects funding to initiatives, and promotes practice and research projects connected to Penn State faculty and students.
We assume an intermediary role between individuals and agencies, linking expertise at Penn State with local communities and forming partnerships with government agencies, non-profit organizations, and citizen groups that are creating an inclusive public commons. Our online community provides a forum for topics related to the role of design in public discourse, democratic practice, and citizen participation. Funding and grant opportunities enhance our efforts by allowing us to deliver financial support to worthy initiatives. All of this is designed to elevate the impact of thoughtful community design and is made possible through a generous endowment from the Don Hamer Foundation.
