Michael Rios

Director of Research
As the inaugural director of the Hamer Center since 1999, Michael Rios has facilitated the completion of over 25 research and curriculum-based projects involving more than 300 students and over a dozen faculty members. This includes external funding in excess of $1,000,000 and partnerships with local, statewide, national, and international organizations. He is the U.S. project co-director of the International Consortium on Sustainable Urbanism, a university-based consortium that includes architecture and landscape architecture programs at the University of Brasilia, University of Rio Grande do Sul, and the State University of New York.
Dr. Rios is past president of the Association for Community Design and executive team member of the Pennsylvania Advocates for Nutrition and Activity. His scholarly work focuses on citizenship, governance, and the design of the public realm. Articles, papers, and book chapters have been published on the related topics in the Journal of Architectural Education (2003), International Conference on Inclusive Environments (2005), Good Deeds, Good Design (2003), From the Studio to the Streets: Service Learning in Architecture and Planning (2006), and the Journal of Park and Recreation Management (2006). Michael Rios has a doctorate in Political Geography from The Pennsylvania State University and received a Master of Architecture and Master of City Planning from the University of California, Berkeley.
