In
the spring of 2000, the Hamer Center was contacted by the Greater
Altoona Economic
Development Corporation (GAEDC) to assist with their commercial
development program. The request comprised several elements, which
included evaluating the adaptive re-use of select downtown properties,
and evaluating the existing public space and parking facilities.
During the fall semester 2001, fourth-year architectural engineering
students, under the direction of Professor Pier Bandini, worked
with the GAEDC and property owners to develop adaptive re-use
concepts for the Mellon Bank and Woolworth buildings.
Working in teams, the students conducted a feasibility analysis
and developed adaptive re-use proposals for each property.
