An urban design studio taught in the School of Architecture and
Landscape Architecture, is a good example of the type of service
learning project that the Hamer Center supports.
The class focused on the borough of Bellefonte, which is on
the verge of enormous change. After the completion of the Interstate
99 expansion, it is anticipated that the commute time between
Bellefonte and State College will be reduced significantly.
The class led a participatory master planning process with the
Bellefonte community that included interviews with community leaders
and a series of public workshops resulting in a preferred vision
for the future of Bellefonte. Infrastructure improvements, infill
housing, mixed-use development, and park design were some of the
recommendations that students proposed. The class also developed
a range of architectural solutions that accomodate growth while
responding sensitively to the historic character of Bellefonte.
