In
the spring of 2001, the Hamer Center was contacted by the Downtown
Carlisle Association (DCA) to assist with redevelopment ideas
for their new post office parking lot. Specifically, the DCA requested
suggestions to improve the vehicular and pedestrian circulation
and parking in and around the post office. Hamer Center staff
worked with the DCA to review their initial request in concert
with their Main Street Action Plan and to develop a series of
issues that the students could address. Under the direction of
Professors Dan Jones and Dan Nadenicek, fourth-year landscape
architecture students participated in a design charrette for one
week in teams that focused on five areas. The specific areas of
focus included:
Redevelopment opportunities for the post office commons area including
pedestrian and vehicular connections to the downtown;
Linkages and connections to the downtown area including recreation,
open space, residential and commercial development;
Development opportunities and regional connections for the square
and downtown gateways;
Opportunities to interpret area history including signage, historical
walking tour and a visitors center; and
Infill and redevelopment opportunities for housing in and around
the downtown area.
The students recommendations were presented at a community
meeting in November. As a result of this work, the DCA has secured
two grants to proceed with implementation of several of the student
ideas.
