In
the Spring of 2000, a class led by James Kalsbeek and Stephen Shaffer
provided a valuable service to the Hamer Center. Freshman architecture
students worked together for several months to conceptualize, design,
and construct portable work stations for the Hamer Center's Mobile
Studio. Each unit is made of several modular pieces that fit together
to create a drafting table and a variety of pin-up and note taking
surfaces. One of the legs of the drafting table is made of a cabinet
which holds all the supplies needed during a mobile studio, while
the other is a series of boards which serve as working surfaces
for drafting and design. These individual pieces were designed in
such a way that they fold and fit into a "charette," or cart that
can be easily transported in the back of a van.
At the Hamer center these charette items are stored in an "ark,"
also designed and constructed by the students. The ark serves
multiple purposes, including storage of the units, an illuminated
surface for tracing and viewing slides, and a cutting board for
model making.
