      City of Johnstown:
        Urban Design Study

In the spring of 2001, Hamer Center staff met with representatives of the City of Johnstown to discuss potential redevelopment projects in the downtown area. Currently, Johnstown has several redevelopment and new construction projects in and around the downtown, and is looking for future improvement projects that address housing and pedestrian circulation, and connections along the river that reflect their natural and cultural heritage. Central to many regional recreational activities, Johnstown remains a strong tourist destination, and the city has been experiencing a strong influx of young professionals and families who are interested in housing and entertainment opportunities in the downtown area.
Hamer Center staff reviewed several documents including the city’s comprehensive plan, and assessing existing projects. This assessment was used to develop recommendations for potential projects surrounding the river, downtown housing opportunities, and the retail/commercial mix of the future entertainment district. Initial recommendations included a new waterfront park, greenway and pedestrian connections along the river, infill housing along the waterfront park and transit-oriented development adjacent to an existing Amtrak station.
