In
the fall of 2000 and spring of 2001, landscape architecture and
architecture students worked with Downtown Lewistown, Inc. to
refine concepts for areas of downtown Lewistown outlined in Coming
Home: the Charter Plan for Downtown Lewistown, developed
by SEDA-Council of Governments. During the fall semester, fourth
year landscape architecture students under the direction of Professors
Sam Dennis, Kelleann Foster, and Dan Jones, worked intensively
for one week in teams that focused specifically on redevelopment
opportunities in the downtown. The specific issues the teams addressed
included: a technology school campus, regional recreation and
greenway connections, walks and parks along the Juniata River
and Kishoquillas Creek, and gateway opportunities throughout the
downtown area and Monument Square. At the same time, 4th year
architecture students under the direction of Professors
Christine Gorby and Michael Rios, documented case study information
addressing Lewistown history, shopping in the downtown area, youth
concerns and needs, behavior observations around Monument Square,
and an inventory of sacred places in the downtown area.
In the spring of 2001, fifth year landscape architecture students
under the direction of Professor Kelleann Foster, worked individually
to refine the earlier concepts, and incorporate case study information.
As part of this work, each student met with citizens of Lewistown
to ascertain needs and desires, and obtain feedback on the concepts
developed for specific downtown areas. Students were required
to work with the community to develop a series of recommendations
and strategies supplemented with phasing options and research
on funding opportunities.
As a result of this work, Downtown Lewistown, Inc., has pursued
development of several of the student concepts. The Hamer Center
has been involved with further refinement of the concepts and
ongoing assistance in an advisory capacity.
