      Philipsburg:
        Library Adaptive Re-use

Friends of the Library, a citizen group in Philipsburg, PA, contacted the Hamer Center in the fall of 2000, requesting assistance regarding the relocation of their public library back to downtown Philipsburg. The collection, currently housed in the outskirts of downtown, has reached capacity and plans for a new library in the downtown area were being discussed. Interested in relocating the library downtown, the Friends group approached the Hamer Center regarding the feasibility of two downtown properties. Fourth year architectural engineering students, under the direction of Professor Pier Bandini, explored relocation and adaptive re-use options for the two properties.

Using the student’s concepts and preliminary calculations, the Friends presented their ideas to the Centre County Library Board and secured funding from the Knight Foundation, the County National Bank and the Centre County Community Foundation for the relocation project. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on September 5, 2001, at the new location of the library in downtown Philipsburg.
