       Assessing Alternative Futures:
       Tom's Run Feasibility Study

Tom's Run is a 317 acre forested property owned by the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy (WPC). Originally acquired for future transfer to Allegheny County as a natural area, this vision did not materialize which prompted WPC to explore alternative uses for the site.

WPC contacted the Hamer Center to assess the viability of Tom's Run for residential development, recreation and open space conservation. The Hamer Center worked closely with WPC staff to analyze the suitability of the site for the type of development that WPC was considering. This included identifying the unique challenges presented by the site -- steep slopes, flood plains, and heavily forested areas; conducting preliminary demographic and housing analysis; and determining the amount of acreage suitable for development.

Equipped with this information, WPC is now in a better position to determine what may be feasible for Tom's Run in the future.
